Frequently Asked Implant Dentistry Questions
in Gulfport, Biloxi & Pascagoula, Mississippi
Who is a candidate for dental implants?
Basically, anyone who is missing a tooth or teeth is a candidate for dental implants. If you have dentures or partial dentures (see our Dentures & Partials section) you may want to get them replaced with dental implants. Also, if you have existing bridgework (see our Crowns & Bridges section), you may want to get that replaced with a dental implant.
If you are about to lose a tooth, you may want to consider a dental implant to replace your missing tooth. However, only a qualified implant dentistry specialist such as Dr. Elenbaas can determine whether dental implants are the right solution for you.
Why would I want to get dental implants?
The benefits of dental implants far outweigh any hesitation you might have about getting them. Implants give you the aesthetics as well as function that your natural teeth have. In fact, most dental implant patients perceive their implants to be almost exactly like their other teeth, so they are extremely pleased with the results. Also, dental implants help to maintain your bone mass in your jaw so you won't look older due to a sunken-in appearance and wrinkles around your jaw area.
What are the types of dental implants?
There are three types of dental implants:
- Root form implant-this is a screw-type implant which is implanted directly into your jawbone underneath your gums and is used when you have a normal amount of height and width to your jawbone
- Plate form implant-this type of implant is set directly on your jawbone underneath your gums and is used when your jawbone is too short in height or too narrow in width
- Subperiosteal implant-an artificial, custom-made jawbone which is used when there is very little height or width to your jawbone due to severe deterioration
How long does implant dentistry take?
Because implant dentistry uses surgical procedures to implant your titanium roots, you will typically need 3 to 6 weeks after the procedure to heal. It all depends on the type and number of implants which you need to complete your treatment, as well as the condition of your jawbone. Therefore, the length of treatment can vary greatly depending on your individual case.
