Is Gum Disease Killing You?

aorta_leaves.jpg We all know that the condition and health of your teeth affect your smile, and it can also decrease your ability to eat and cause pain. But do you know that it can impact your overall health?  It has been found that people with gum disease are more likely to suffer from atherosclerosis, a narrowing of blood vessels which can cause a stroke or heart attack.  The study concluded that people who had a higher level of a certain bacteria, which causes gum disease, also had an increase in carotid artery thickness. The base of the tooth at the gum line is the main area that harbors bacteria.  The normal gap between the base of the tooth and gum tissue is about one-sixteenth of an inch.  When the gum is healthy it provides a natural germ barrier, but when it's unhealthy, it is just the opposite. The gum develops a periodontal pocket that holds and grows bacteria which is free to enter the blood.  Regular cleanings and dental examinations are the first steps to stop serious pariodontal disease.

Dr. Moise Desvarieux, of Columbia University Medical Center's Mailman School of Public Health who headed a study linking gum disease to atherosclerosis stated, "because gum infections are preventable and treatable, taking care of your oral health could very well have a significant impact on your cardiovascular health."

We truly care about you and your health!  Keep up to date with your cleanings, and with insurance your cleaning and exam could incur little to no out of pocket cost.  Without insurance we accept all credit cards and Care Credit.  If dental anxiety is your problem, we have extensive experience and certification in sedation dentistry.
