Sedation Dentistry
in Gulfport, Biloxi & Pascagoula, Mississippi
Sedation dentistry is the branch of specialized dentistry performed by a sedation dentist who is trained in sedation. One may have a calming, tranquilizing medication before your procedure is performed. The second is a deeper level of sedation called "IV sedation". Dr. Elenbaas and Dr. Alexander are both certified in sedation dentistry.
If you have fear or anxiety about going into your dentist's office to have a dental procedure performed, sedation dentistry may be your answer. Especially if you are avoiding regular checkups and/or necessary dental treatment, you may need to find a dentist who offers sleep dentistry to help you be calm and tranquil during your dental procedure.
Sedation dentistry may help you if you have any of the following conditions:
- Anxiety or fear of visiting your dentist's office
- Bad previous dental experiences
- Difficulty getting numb with anesthesia alone
- Difficulty with mobility
- Extreme gag reflexes
- Fear of needles
- Limited time off from work to come to dental appointments
- Painful teeth
- Sensitive teeth
- Stress
When you're undergoing sedation dentistry, the sedation dentist will prescribe an oral sedative in pill form for you to take prior to arriving at Beach View Dental. You will need someone to drive you to and from your appointment since you will be under sedation and not able to operate a vehicle. You will be under sedation, but you will not be asleep. You will still be awake and able to respond to our commands. And, since oral sedatives do not provide pain relief, you will still need an injection of local anesthesia before your procedure is performed. After your dental procedure is performed you will usually still be groggy.
