TMJ Treatment

If you are suffering from the chronic pain of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) where your teeth and jaw are misaligned, forcing your muscles to overwork and cause discomfort and pain, you will need to have a neuromuscular dentistry specialist such as Dr. Elenbaas create a TMJ treatment plan for you.

After diagnosing you with TMD, a neuromuscular dentist like Dr. Elenbaas will need to determine the ideal position of your temporomandibular joint (TMJ) or jaw joint beneath your temples. She may use a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator or TENS unit (a pocket-size, portable, battery-operated device that sends electrical impulses to certain parts of your body to block pain signals) to relax your muscles so she can then track how your jaw moves.

While you open and close your jaw, Dr. Elenbaas will determine the ideal position for your jaw joint. Once she has pinpointed this information, she can start your TMJ treatment by either adjusting your bite or creating an orthotic (bite positioner) for you. By wearing your orthotic, it will allow your jaw to rest in the most comfortable position for you. That is often all you need to relieve your symptoms.

Once Dr. Elenbaas determines that your orthotic is in your optimal bite position, she will then recommend other treatments to achieve and keep your bite in the perfect position. These treatments may include such things as orthodontics, Invisalign, or cosmetic bonding.
