Frequently Asked Teeth Whitening Questions

in Gulfport, Biloxi & Pascagoula, Mississippi

Who is a candidate for tooth whitening?

Almost anyone who has stains or discoloration and wants whiter teeth is a candidate for a teeth whitening procedure. An experienced cosmetic dentist like Dr. Elenbaas can consult with you to determine the best tooth whitening procedure for your individual situation.

What are the different types of professional tooth-whitening procedures?

Beach View Dental offers the two basic types of professional tooth-whitening: in-office Zoom!® tooth whitening and NITE WHITE, a take-home whitening kit. The NITE WHITE kit results are usually seen in the first night. Maximum results generally occur when the process is continued for 10 to 14 nights. The Zoom!® in-office procedure can be complete in just one visit. (For more information about Zoom!®, please see our Zoom!® Tooth Whitening page.)

How do professional teeth-whitening procedures compare with the over-the-counter products that I can purchase myself?

The problem with over-the-counter products is that they do not provide an even, natural-looking whiteness. Usually your front teeth are the whitest, your molars are darker, and your eye teeth are the darkest. An experienced cosmetic dentist like Dr. Elenbaas will be able to control and adjust your professional tooth-whitening process and adjust the level of whiteness when necessary. So professional tooth-whitening procedures are a much more reliable alternative than over-the-counter products.

How long will my tooth-whitening results last?

The results of individual teeth whitening may vary, as well how long your whiter smile will last. However, if you avoid products that may stain your teeth such as coffee, tea, tobacco, or other staining agents, your teeth will stay brighter longer. Also remember to practice good oral hygiene (brushing and flossing daily as well as using whitening toothpaste and a soft-bristle toothbrush) and visit your dentist regularly (at least once every six months) to maintain your lighter tooth color. If you take these measures, your tooth whitening could last you a very long time!

Is teeth whitening safe for my teeth?

Teeth whitening is extremely safe. Although some patients experience a little sensitivity in their teeth, they are very few. All the procedure is doing is removing discoloration and stains from your teeth. It doesn't soften your tooth enamel or fillings. Also, it is not an invasive procedure, unlike some other dental procedures.
